The North Pacific Marine Science Organization (PICES), an intergovernmental science organization, was established in 1992 to promote and coordinate marine research in the North Pacific and its adjacent seas. Its present members are Canada, Japan, People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, and the United States of America. FUTURE (Forecasting and Understanding Trends, Uncertainty and Responses of North Pacific Marine Ecosystems ) is an integrative Science Program undertaken by the member nations and affiliates of PICES to understand how marine ecosystems in the North Pacific respond to climate change and human activities, to forecast ecosystem status based on a contemporary understanding of how nature functions, and to communicate new insights to its members, governments, stakeholders and the public. • Dr. Kazuko Odate, former chief researcher at the Tohoku National Fisheries Research Institute, Japan
    July 9, 1932 - August 13, 2025

PICES is sad to learn that Dr. Kazuko Odate recently passed away, and acknowledges her lifetime of contributions to North Pacific science.
Dr. Kazuko Odate joined the Tohoku National Fisheries Research Institute, Japan, in 1950, when female ocean scientists were rare and she dedicated 42 years to studying zooplankton, establishing the world-renowned ODATE Collection of about 20,000 zooplankton samples. Her pioneering work revealed long-term variations in zooplankton and their links to fisheries, providing critical insight into climate impacts on marine ecosystems in the western North Pacific. Awarded a Doctor of Fisheries Science by Hokkaido University, her contributions earned international recognition, and the Odate Collection and the associated monitoring efforts by the institute won the 2022 PICES Ocean Monitoring Award (POMA). Her legacy continues to guide marine science today. We honour her memory.
