Ocean observing systems and ecosystem monitoring
33 early career scientists from around the world got a first-hand look at how scientists monitor our oceans and fisheries. Scientists from the Northwest Fisheries Science Center (NOAA), Oregon State University and other institutions presented lectures and laboratory demonstrations, and participants got hands on experience doing fieldwork to deploy ocean-observing equipment. Satellite oceanography for the earth environment
Its timing coincided with the launching of a Korean satellite. Principles and applications in three major areas (optical, infra-red and microwave) of satellite oceanography were introduced to 35 students, early career scientists and other professionals from 7 countries. In addition to lectures and seminars, hands-on training of image processing was provided. The summary report of the school is published in PICES Press (Vol. 18, No. 1).

Biomass-based management
Fifty students and early career scientists from China, Japan, Korea, Russia and U.S.A. attended to learn about Ecosystem-based management (EBM) of marine resources as an integrated approach to management that considers the entire ecosystem, including humans. 1st PICES/CREAMS Summer School
Ocean circulation and ecosystem modeling
Main objective of the summer school was to teach and motivate postgraduate students, early-career scientists, and other professionals as the principal users of numerical models. The three-day summer school summarized the present knowledge of circulation and ecosystem modeling, and introduced numerical models that could be used and applied in various fields of oceanography.
